Panthers place Xavier Legette on IR, make key decision on another WR

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have made a hugely consequential decision with third-year wide receiver Xavier Legette.

They made another decision that is probably indicative of Jalen Coker’s health, too.

On Saturday, a little over 24 hours until the Panthers host the Detroit Lions in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on the Sunday Night Football stage, the franchise put Legette on injured reserve.

That means the third-year wideout will be out for at least the next four games. Legette hurt himself on the 55-yard catch he made against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2; he finished that game but then was ruled out for the next game, against the Browns, and was considered “week-to-week” thereafter.

Head coach Dave Canales has not specified what Legette’s injury is.

That’s not the only major decision at the wide receiver position that the Panthers made ahead of Sunday. Carolina has elevated wide receiver and training camp standout Ja’seem Reed off the practice squad. This news is telling, considering the fact that Canales told reporters Friday that Reed would only be elevated if Coker — who’s been managing a quad injury since hurting himself against the Browns on Sunday — couldn’t go against the Lions.

“Ja’seem will come up and help; last week we finished the game with Brycen (Tremayne), made a couple of nice plays for us. David Moore was also up for us, catching punts, able to help us out that way,” Canales told reporters Friday. “If Jalen doesn’t go, (John) Metchie has practiced and is ready because Jalen hasn’t been able to go fully a couple of the other days, so John was able to take some of his reps.”

Canales later clarified that Reed would be activated “just if” Coker is hurt. Then again, the Panthers have a few extra hours to evaluate Coker’s quad with the game now being at 8:20 p.m. in Bank of America Stadium instead of the typical 1 p.m. kickoff time.

If Coker is out Sunday, the Panthers would be down two of their top three receivers in a game when they’ll probably be asked to score a lot of points. Not only are the Lions a top-5 offense — with QB Jared Goff, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and RB Jahmyr Gibbs leading the way — the Panthers will also be hurting in their defensive backfield; starting corners Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson were placed on injured reserve earlier this week.

Panthers’ other moves pre-Lions

In addition to the Legette-to-IR and Reed-elevation-from-practice-squad news, the Panthers also announced two other roster-related moves:

— The Panthers are elevating cornerback Robert Rochell to the game-day roster; they signed Rochell to the practice squad earlier this week because of the cornerback depth issues with which they were faced. Rochell spent the summer in Charlotte and had several good moments in training camp.

— Carolina announced that rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling cleared concussion protocol and now has no game designation for Sunday’s game. He had previously been listed as questionable. Freeling’s presence is much needed on an offensive line that’s already going to be down its best player in starting left guard Damien Lewis, who is out for at least one week with an elbow injury.
