Travelers Championship set for Monday playoff between Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland

CROMWELL, Conn. — After an 80-minute weather delay that changed the tenor of the TPC River Highlands just ahead of the Travelers Championship finish, Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland were both staring down putts on opposite sides of the 18th green.
Scheffler’s shot for birdie and the lead in the final round was from 27 feet, six inches. Hovland’s was 24 feet, 10 inches.
The top-ranked golfer in the world, who already won at TPC River Highlands in 2024, rolled his putt just off line, eight feet past the hole. Hovland’s chance, for the win, tiptoed along the right side of the hole and settled nine inches away.
Both made par just before sunset to finish the round at 21-under and set up a playoff, which will be played at 9 a.m. ET from the 18th hole on Monday. Tickets for Sunday will be valid for the Monday playoff, tournament officials said.
Scheffler, who came into the round one stroke behind Hovland’s lead at 20-under after he was leapfrogged on the 18th hole Saturday night, was relatively steady throughout the final round, aside from a bogey on No. 7. He made birdie on Nos. 4, 10 and 13 to get to 21-under before the rain delayed play.
His playing partner, Hovland, fell off the top spot with a bogey on No. 1 and was battling to stay in contention.
The 28-year-old from Norway, seeking his eighth PGA Tour win, made three more bogeys, and three birdies, to sit two strokes behind Scheffler when play was stopped. He was first to birdie after play resumed, much to the delight of the Norwegian World Cup fans in attendance, and tied the leader in the clubhouse, Collin Morikawa, at 20-under through 15 holes. Meanwhile, Scheffler misjudged his approach and scrambled to save par.
U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark found his way into the mix after starting the day seven shots back and was alone in fourth place at 19-under through 16 holes, with Matt Fitzpatrick and Akshay Bhatia tied just behind him at 18-under.
Fitzpatrick added birdie on No. 17 and made par on No. 18 to finish his round in fourth place at 19-under. Clark couldn’t make it across the water on No. 17, where he settled for bogey and slipped back to 18-under. He and Bhatia both made par on the final hole and went into the clubhouse in fifth.
Scheffler settled for par on No. 17 after his birdie chance lipped out from 12 feet, and he and Hovland went to the 18th tee knotted at 21-under. Scheffler missed the fairway, landing his drive on a hill along the right side, while Hovland’s was clean, save for some casual water. Both were able to land their next shot on the green to set up the finish.
It will be the 26th time that Connecticut’s PGA Tour event ends in a playoff and the fifth since 2015. Scheffler has come out on the winning side of it before, securing his 2024 win after a dramatic one-hole playoff against Tom Kim.
