LANDOVER, Md. — The San Francisco 49ers cut kicker Jake Moody a month ago. Moody came to Chicago to join the Bears practice squad and await his opportunity.

On Monday night, an opportunity presented itself.

With Cairo Santos sidelined by a right thigh injury, it was Moody who knocked in a 38-yard field goal on the final play to give the Bears a 25-24 win over the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium.

A year after Jayden Daniels heaved a 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to beat the Bears in dramatic fashion, it was Moody and the Bears who came away with a last-second win over the Commanders. Moody finished with four field goals in five attempts.

Daniels and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt fumbled a handoff late in the game to give the Bears life with 3:07 remaining. Quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense powered their way into Commanders territory and ate up most of the clock along the way.

Moody’s winning kick came after Daniels and the Commanders erased a 13-0 first-half deficit. Daniels threw three touchdown passes, and the Commanders looked to be in control in the final minutes — until the fumbled exchange.

Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright was in the right place at the right time and jumped on the fumble for a crucial takeaway, the Bears defense’s third of the game.

The Bears won their third straight game to improve to 3-2, while the Commanders dropped to 3-3.

The Bears took advantage of two first-half takeaways from their defense to build that early lead.

First, safety Jaquan Brisker intercepted a Daniels pass near the goal line. Later, defensive end Montez Sweat forced a fumble that linebacker T.J. Edwards jumped on. On the next possession, Williams guided the offense on a 35-yard scoring drive and capped it himself with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Williams threw for 252 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-29 passing. He connected with D’Andre Swift on a short pass in the second half that Swift ran 55 yards for a touchdown.

Swift also rushed for 108 yards on 14 carries in his best game of the season.
