NEW YORK — On an afternoon when the Mariners needed to feel something other than defeat, they turned to the leader of the pitching staff and the man they handed the ball to on opening day.

In a series finale the Mariners needed to win to avoid being swept in back-to-back series and find something resembling momentum as they head to Houston for perhaps their most important series of the season, they gave the ball to Logan Gilbert hoping he would put a stop to all that had been going wrong.

Gilbert, now the most senior member of the rotation, delivered the Mariners the sort of outing you expect from a staff ace when a team is mired in a losing streak. The lanky right-hander set the tone, pitching six scoreless innings to lead the Mariners to a 1-0 victory over the Yankees.

He outdueled Yankees starter Max Fried, who was almost as good.

The talented lefty tossed five innings, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The only run allowed came in the second inning when Weston Wilson, who was starting in place of Taylor Ward, took advantage of a cutter in the middle of the plate, sending a fly ball over the wall in left field for a solo homer.

It was just the second homer that Fried has allowed in 15 starts this season.
