Q: I wonder if America can make it another 250 years when I hear some in our country curse this nation. They enjoy the fruits of our great freedoms that they attack and abuse. Shouldn’t all citizens who claim to love this country honor a nation that gives out of its abundance to the nations of the world?

A: We should honor America because she has been the most generous nation in history. This nation has shared its wealth and faith with a world in need. When a disaster occurs anywhere in the world, America is there with help and aid. In famine, in earthquakes, in floods, and in distresses of every kind, the heart of America is touched and rushes in.

Our nation has sent its disciples of compassion to the continents of the world to bear the Good News that God loves them and is willing to give purpose and meaning to empty, alienated lives.

We should honor America because she has never hidden her problems and faults. If poverty exists, if riots occur, the world knows about it. Instead of an “Iron Curtain” we have a “picture window.” The whole world watches – sometimes critically and sometimes with admiration.

The men who signed the Declaration of Independence were moved by a magnificent dream that amazed the world. The dream was rooted in a book called the Bible. It proclaimed freedoms that most of the world thought impossible.

Let those who claim they want to improve the nation by destroying it join all of us in a new unity and a new dedication, by peaceful means, to make the dream of purpose and meaning to life a reality, of freedom a reality, of social justice a reality, and of peace a reality.
