How do to present myself in such a way to bring glory to Jesus?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: My sweet Nana doesn’t understand the young generation, and though she sweetly tries to change my appearance, she doesn’t understand that I don’t want to look like her – 60 years older. She says that if I love the Lord, I’ll want to present myself in such a way to bring glory to Jesus and have rightful pride in appearance. Truthfully, I think she resents my sloppy looks, but it’s in style. What’s wrong with that? We go to church. I do want to set a good example to those younger than me. – Y.P.
A: The Bible places an emphasis on spiritual sloppiness rather than physical sloppiness. It is possible for a person to be impeccable in his or her attire and person, and yet be sloppy in morals and conduct. On the other hand, a person of modest means may not be put on the “best-dressed” list, but his or her character can be irreproachable. The Bible speaks of man looking on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart (see 1 Samuel 16:7). But a neat, clean, well-groomed C
hristian can certainly be inspiring.
Young people often succumb to peer pressure even if they really don’t desire to do the things that are presented. Many times, they follow the current trend in dress at the expense of modesty. Young people say they don’t want to conform, but they often do conform to fashion, loose language, and other habits they see in others they seek acceptance from.
It would be poor policy to keep the inside of our houses immaculately clean, but let tin cans and trash accumulate in the yard. If Christ has cleansed our hearts, the least that we can do is to keep our bodies clean, neat, and presentable, for Christians are temples of the Holy Spirit.
