Jim Carrey is reportedly in talks for a live action version of The Jetsons.

The 63-year-old actor is being lined up for a major role in a feature film adaptation of the iconic animated comedy, which first launched in 1962.

According to Variety, Carrey is in talks to lead the Warner Bros. Pictures project, with Colin Trevorrow poised to direct.

The Jurassic World Dominion filmmaker and Joe Epstein are in discussions to write a screenplay, but there are no further details on a potential storyline.

The Jetsons has been brought to the big screen before, with 1990's animated feature Jetsons: The Movie, while there have been non-theatrical crossovers with The Flintstones (1987) and WWE (2017) over the years.

The series - which has seen various revivals in the '70s and '80s - focuses on a typical nuclear family who just so happen to live in outer space.

The futuristic show feature George and Jane Jetson, who live in Orbit City with their children Judy and Elroy, their dog Astro, and robot Rosie to help with the chores.

In recent years, Carrey's acting roles have been limited to playing Dr. Ivo 'Eggman' Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog film trilogy between 2020 and 2024.

In 2022, he suggested he was "being fairly serious" about retiring from acting.

He told Access Hollywood at the time: "It depends.

"If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink, that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road.

"But I'm taking a break."

However, he later admitted "you can't be definite about these things", and acknowledged the drawing power of a "good idea" or team.

Last year, he told Comicbook.com: "You can't be definite about these things. I said I'd like to retire, but I think I was talking more about 'power-resting.'

"Because as soon as a good idea comes your way or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just-- things tend to change."

He noted how each offer would be considered on its own merit, and he would even be open to reprising roles like Stanley Ipkiss from The Mask.

He added: "Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It's not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know."

He also entertained the idea of playing The Grinch again in the future, given how modern CGI would dampen the "excruciating process" he went through for the original film.

He said: "If we can figure out The Grinch… The thing about it is that, on the day, I had to do that with a ton of makeup, and I could hardly breath, and it was an extremely excruciating process.

"The children were in my mind all the time. 'It's for the kids, it's for the kids, it's for the kids.'

"And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do some other things."
