Serbia's Vucic says he will resign soon to help party in vote

Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic says he’ll quit his post within weeks to help his political party win early elections expected later this year, a move that would enable him to stay in power as prime minister if the party prevails in the ballot.

“I’ll be the president for just several weeks. Then I’ll resign,” Vucic said at a large rally of his supporters in Belgrade. “In the upcoming elections, if the party wants that and asks for it, together with you, I will help win people’s trust,” he added.

Last month, Vucic said the early vote for Serbia’s 250-seat parliament would take place between late September and mid-November. The vote would likely be held simultaneously with a presidential race to elect his successor, also in a popular vote.

Vucic’s second consecutive term as president, a maximum allowed in the country’s constitution, expires in May 2027. In a Bloomberg interview earlier this month, he said his return as government leader “might happen” because his Serbian Progressive Party might need his leadership.
